A keyword is a word or phrase that describes the main concepts of a topic. Before you start searching it is a good idea to brainstorm synonyms and combinations of terms. This will increase your chances of finding information on a topic.
For example, if your topic was capital punishment, other keywords might include death penalty, death sentence, execution, etc
How do I find keywords for my topic?
Step 1 - Summarize your topic in one or two sentences
Step 2 - Keywords and phrases need to be highlighted
Step 3 - Identify synonyms, alternate terms, phrases and variant spelling
Step 4 - Link your keywords and phrases;
Step 5 - Locate your information.
What is the main idea of my research topic?
What specific ideas am I trying to describe or prove?
What coverage am I interested in: current information; historical information; biographical information
What types of information am I interested in, eg. statistics, journal articles, essays, basic information on the subject
With a partner, take the topic of school uniforms or gun control and list of number of keywords for this topic. Remember a keyword does not have to be a single word. It can be a “key phrase.”
